Irene Simpson passed away an Saturday 26 February at the Southland Hospice, Kew after a struggle with cancer for several years. Irene joined the Southland Branch in the late 1960s and was Branch Secretary for periods up to 1992. Her main contribution to the League was the fact that she was Minute Secretary for the Administration Committee from l980 to 1992 and as National President over that period we worked together on many projects and the Adcom meetings held at her home, though businesslike. were also conducted in a social atmosphere with her husband, Eddy also being interested in the hobby.
Though Irene did not write for many verifications, she was an active listener and in her later years passed her radio amateur certificate and here again it was more of an interest than participating in the hobby. Irene was a keen telephone conversationalist and always had lots of interesting news of what she had heard on the bands to pass on to members.
At the age of 80 she leaves husband Eddy and four sons, as well as grandchildren. Members of the Southland Branch have been saddened by her loss. Arthur Cushen.
